Game-changing innovation.
And then some.
Oakley Capital Investments' reporting is at the cutting edge of digitisation.
Its 2023 online report was described as ‘The exemplar of digital reporting’ by the inventor of the ESEF format.
It received multiple awards for its many ground-breaking innovations, described by the judges at the C&F Awards as ‘the future of reporting’. And regulators have endorsed this ‘native’ HTML approach as best practice.
So, how did Oakley's 2024 report build on this and innovate even further?
Multi-format reporting, created digital-first
In collaboration with Friend Studio, Oakley Capital Investments (OCI) delivered its full 2024 annual reporting suite using Reportl, building on the success of its 2023 suite.
With Reportl, Friend Studio delivered all required formats from a single source of content, enabling OCI to publish their full online report, interactive PDF and ESEF filing simultaneously.
The story

The context
Oakley Capital Investments (OCI) is a FTSE 250 listed company, offering public investors access to Oakley's private equity (PE) portfolio and the returns it generates.
OCI’s reporting is a crucial tool for stakeholder engagement, building trust in the business and understanding of its investment case. They are a leading investor in digitisation and technology businesses, and they need their reporting and communications to reflect this.

The challenge
High quality reporting communications is crucial to Oakley's strategy, but they face the same timing challenges as many reporters – following Board sign-off, the results announcement, report launch and ESEF filing must be completed the next morning.
Following the success of their 2023 digital-first report, the OCI team were keen to use the valuable analytics data to enhance areas of the report which attract the most users, to maximise stakeholder engagement.
And with the new requirements of Provision 29 of the UK Corporate Governance Code around the corner, the process needed to be ready for additional internal and audit committee controls.

The solution
In ‘year two’ of using with Reportl, OCI were keen to build upon their groundbreaking 2023 report – which took home seven trophies from six reporting and communications awards.
OCI’s 2024 report incorporates many improvements based on analytics captured from the prior report.
User's preferences guided the 2024 report’s content and structure, introducing more mobile-friendly, accessible and engaging graphics, video and animation at key points of the user journey.
The report showcases how high volumes of complex information can be distilled into a digestible and easy-to-follow story, while allowing for intuitive navigation and enhanced readability.
The benefits
85% of visitors now choose the online report over the PDF. But it’s also worth noting that the number of PDF downloads is now ten times higher than for previous ‘print-first’ PDF reports. Why?
Because digital-first reporting is Google-friendly – OCI's reporting now attracts around 12 times the number of visitors compared to the previous PDF-only reports.
In addition to this, the many improvements to the content, structure and design have transformed the 2024 report’s user engagement score – the average time spent on each page has nearly doubled, from 58 seconds in 2023, to 1 minute 45 seconds in 2024.
OCI’s 2024 report also delivers many benefits of the digital-first process including more efficient, timely, and fully-compliant reporting.
What the OCI team said:
‘The report looks great and is a significant step forward from last year. I’m super impressed.’
